Migration ist derzeit das wichtigste innenpolitische Thema in Europa. Während der demografische Wandel und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Verfügbarkeit von Arbeitskräften und Talenten Migration notwendig machen, sehen sich politische Flügel mit Fragen im Kontext zu Sicherheit und sozialem Zusammenhalt konfrontiert. Zudem steht Europa mit den sogenannten «Klimaflüchtlingen» aus Afrika eine weitere Herausforderung bevor, deren Auswirkungen wir heute noch nicht abschätzen können.

Der Journalist, Autor und Forscher Stephen W. Smith bezeichnet die Massenmigration aus Afrika als grösste Herausforderung des 21. Jahrhunderts. Er wird am Annual Meeting 2024 das Thema Migration aus den unterschiedlichen und widersprüchlichen Blickwinkeln beleuchten und aufzeigen, mit welchen Fragen wir uns heute schon auseinandersetzen müssen, wenn Europa seine Wirtschaft stark halten will.

Der 1956 geborene Amerikaner war Afrika-Redakteur bei Libération und Le Monde, ist Autor von rund 15 in Frankreich veröffentlichten Büchern und arbeitete als Analyst für die Vereinten Nationen und die International Crisis Group (ICG). Seit 2007 ist er Professor of Practice an der Duke University in den USA, wo er Afrikanistik unterrichtet.

‘Immigration will be the issue of the coming decades.‘

Migration is currently the most important domestic policy issue in Europe. While demographic change and its impact on the availability of labour and talent make migration necessary, political wings are confronted with questions relating to security and social cohesion. Moreover, Europe is facing a further challenge with the so-called ‘climate refugees‘ from Africa, the effects of which we cannot yet assess.

Journalist, author and researcher Stephen W. Smith describes mass migration from Africa as the greatest challenge of the 21st century. At the Annual Meeting 2024, he will shed light on the topic of migration from different and contradictory perspectives and highlight the issues we need to address today if Europe wants to keep its economy strong.

Born in 1956, the American was Africa editor at Libération and Le Monde, is the author of around 15 books published in France and has worked as an analyst for the United Nations and the International Crisis Group (ICG). Since 2007, he has been Professor of Practice at Duke University in the USA, where he teaches African Studies.
